I joined a teacher research group (TRG) last year run by a primary Mastery Specialist from Cohort 1, so we began to introduce teaching for mastery during my involvement in that.  Now every year group at my school is involved to some extent.  I made the mistake of trying to do it all at once, but that is just not possible, so when we are advised to start with just Y1 – yes – and the other year groups can just cherry-pick the things that will currently work best in that year group.  The principle I have ‘stolen’ for all year groups is ‘guided practice’ (children work in mixed ability pairs to attempt a problem/ question before they move on to independent work).
