Cat Stone, Castle Academy, Northampton. Enigma Maths Hub

I have learnt about teaching for mastery on my MaST course, but in terms of teaching a ‘mastery lesson’ we really have very little clue at our school.  Some people here have more experience and it’s really helpful to have a mix within the Hub so that we can go and see schools that are a bit further ahead in the process.   At my school, we have two NQTs teaching in Y1 so I’m hoping they will be really responsive to the new ideas.  I’m thinking a lot about their needs in terms of subject knowledge because to deliver teaching for mastery effectively, I think you have to have pretty sound subject knowledge – it’s not always easy to identify the mathematical structure, to know which numbers/questions to use for variation and to draw out a child’s reasoning skills.
