Caren Paterson and Marie Parker, Chorlton Park Primary School, North West One Maths Hub

Every day the children do a mental maths starter, consisting of eight questions, each building on the previous one, and gradually making children think more, for example putting the missing answer at the beginning of an equation, and introducing the greater than or less than sign as well. The starters also build on each other through the week, so division facts related to the 2 and 4 times table would come a day or two after the corresponding multiplication facts. It’s all designed to help children see patterns and connections, which they then discuss every day when they mark them.
