Shahed said one of the key changes already made was to enable the school’s maths lead teacher (previously a class teacher) to devote more of her time to mathematics. She now teaches maths herself for half the morning, and spends the other half supporting other class teachers with their maths teaching. In the afternoons she supports and oversees the TAs in their role doing short (15-20 minutes) catch-up with pupils struggling in basic number work.
Other changes introduced at Elmhurst include:
- Encouraging teachers to design their maths lessons by incorporating small steps in children’s learning
- Moving towards daily short maths homework tasks (two or three questions) rather than longer, weekly homework.
- Weekly, one hour 1:1 tutoring sessions for pupils needing extra support.
- Regular staff meetings devoted to improving teachers’ maths subject knowledge
